ECU Recoding, remote windows, DRL Disable, seat belt chime - 2006-2008 VW

By using a can-bus capable vag-com tool, one can recode the MKV (Jetta, GLI, GTI, Rabbit, and Passat) ecu to do a number of interesting things. Personalized settings can be created, but the most popular are:

  • Using the remote to roll up and down the power windows!
  • Disabling the DRL's (Daytime Running Lights)
  • Disabling the seat belt chime
  • Modify alarm honk/flash when arming or disarming
  • Active Fog Light use with High Beams
  • Activate the cabin heater (heat with a cold engine)
  • Adjust power steering assist (helps with straight freeway dead zone)
  • Adjust MFA display for instant and average MPG calculation

How Long Coding Works in hex and bin

***NOTE***: I've fubared these codes so they are completely FALSE. Some of you are copying codes and ignoring the warnings. These codes posted are 100% FALSE, do not use them! DONOTJUSTCOPYTHISUSETHELONGCODINGHELPER - Yes, use the Long Coding helper in vag-com. You MUST start with your original coding to derive your new code. If you copy a code, bad things can happen, mmmmkay?

Reference for DRL's and Comfort opening and closing via remote.

We need to work with two different long codings. DRL's are under Central Electronics, and Remote windows are under the Comfort System.

Daytime Running Lights:
Use the Long Coding Helper in Vag-com (use the link above), and PRINT this page. Reference the bits and bytes, and with the included Long Coding Helper in Vag-com, it's as easy as clicking the check boxes!

***NEVER COPY THESE CODES*** start with YOUR long coding then work the bits or use long coding helper!!!! This is just an example coding, yours will most likely be very different

Select 09 (Central Electronics)
Long Coding -> Function 07

Original Coding:
17078E2340044A00991700000028001100280B0B5C

Working with byte 00:
17 = 00010111, drl off = 00000111 = hex 07

New coding:
07078E2340044A00991700000028001100280B0B5C

Remote activated windows:

Select 46 (Comfort System)
Long Coding -> Function 07

Use the Long Coding Helper in Vag-com (use the link above), and PRINT this page. Reference the bits and bytes, and with the included Long Coding Helper in Vag-com, it's as easy as clicking the check boxes!

I have 19 byte coding for the Comfort System (46).
So my coding, I had to change bytes 06, 07, and 08

Many other options can be done, but this is basically enabled for use with the remote:
open: windows down sunroof NOT open
close: windows up, sunroof CLOSE if it's open

06 from 28 to 08
07 from 1B to 3F
08 from 09 to 29

or in binary notation:
00101000 to 00001000 for byte 06
00011011 to 00111111 for byte 07
00001001 to 00101001 for byte 08

With more details:
Byte 06 Bit 5 Comfort function power windows/sunroof via remote control inactive || from 0 to 1
Byte 07 Bit 2 Comfort opening power windows via remote control active || from 0 to 1
Byte 07 Bit 5 Comfort closing power windows via remote control active || from 0 to 1
Byte 08 Bit 5 Comfort closing sunroof via remote control active || from 0 to 1

That's what worked for me, this may not work for you!! But here's the codings:

***NEVER COPY THESE CODES*** start with YOUR long coding then work the bits or use long coding helper!!!! This is just an example coding, yours will most likely be very different

Original coding:
13900E880106281B0904050FB0080F0480A540

Enabling remote rollup/down. Sunroof only on close if it's open:
13900E880106083F2904050FB0080F0480A540

SEAT BELT CHIME:
Control Module Coding

Select 17 (Instrument Cluster)
Coding -> Function 07

00??x0x: Extra-Options

+01 - Brake Pad Warning active
+02 - Seatbelt Warning active
+04 - Washer Fluid Warning active
+16 - Sedan (Jetta)

So if you wanted everything active....

0023x0x where x is the value of the original coding, let's say it was set there from the factory.

To remove seat belt warning, just subtract the 02.... so it would now be:

0021x0x

My stock coding:
0023203

With no seat belt chime:
0021203

FOGS with High Beams

Ok, if you run fogs, here's one that a lot of ya'll might forget.

Stock is to turn the fogs OFF when I hit the high beams. Well, I like to see as much as possible and I always DIM when there's oncoming traffic... so....

-> 09<

***NEVER COPY THESE CODES*** start with YOUR long coding then work the bits or use long coding helper!!!! This is just an example coding, yours will most likely be very different

Orig [well, my coding as of the last modifications] coding:

769B0E0E1899281B0904050FB0080F0480A540

Allowing fogs WITH highbeams:
769B0E0E1899083F2904050FB0080F0480A540

Once again, it's in the long coding helper, but it's one that is overlooked. Ahhh, much better now, my yellow fogs light up the area in front of me when my high beams are on (actually when my xenon eyelids are up, but you all know what I mean).

Aux Cabin Heater
The aux cabin heater activates some warm air through the vents before the heater warms up. Not the hottest, just mild warm air that feels oh so nice on a cold winter morning. A lot of cars have this deactivated from the dealer.

All you need is to turn on this bit under Select 09 (Central Electronics):

Byte 04 Bit 0 Auxiliary Heating installed

Most NA cars do not have the heater installed. Scan for codes to see if there is an error in the control module after recoding.

Steering Assist
You can change how much input is needed on the wheel to turn it. It's set at 5 on the GLI.

Select 44 (Steering Assist)
--> 10 Adaptation
Read channel 1.

Lower numbers are harder steering, higher numbers are easier. Range is reported to be between 0 and 6.

This is reported to not work at the current time with vag-com on 2007 models.

Adjusting MPG in the MFA(display)

If you think your reported MPG are off in the display, it probably is. Pen and paper work the best to see how far off you are. Find out how many percent you are off, and you can adjust what you see in the MFA display

17 Instruments

10 Adaptation

write down your values here:

Channel 03 is the instant reported MPG

If you have 100 in there, and you know it's reading low by 3%, then change the value to 103. Each increment is 1%. It's that easy.
